Climbing Cotopaxi: Ecuador’s Most Iconic Summit With Ecuador Eco Adventure

Climbing Cotopaxi (5,897 m / 19,347 ft) is one of the most extraordinary mountaineering experiences on the planet. Known for its perfect conical shape, active glacier, and breathtaking views over the Avenue of the Volcanoes, Cotopaxi stands as Ecuador’s most climbed high-altitude mountain—and it is also the most requested expedition at Ecuador Eco Adventure.
During the climbing season we operate almost daily departures, offering safe, well-structured expeditions led by ASEGUIM-certified guides.

Why Cotopaxi Is One of the World’s Best Glacier Climbs

Cotopaxi is considered a top destination for beginner and intermediate mountaineers because of its relatively accessible route, reliable weather windows, and stunning alpine scenery. The ascent crosses active glacier terrain with crevasses, snow bridges, and gradually steepening slopes, making it a true high-altitude challenge without requiring advanced technical skills.
For many climbers, Cotopaxi becomes their first major high-altitude summit, while for others it is the perfect training ground for higher peaks in the Andes and Himalayas.

Acclimatization at Tambo Paxi Lodge

A successful climb begins with proper acclimatization. For this crucial phase, we work closely with Tambo Paxi Lodge, located inside Cotopaxi National Park. Sleeping at altitude helps climbers adapt gradually, while the lodge provides warm rooms, Andean meals, and the perfect conditions to rest and prepare.
The surrounding páramo is ideal for short warm-up walks and glacier training sessions before approaching the mountain.

The Ascent from José Rivas Refuge

The actual climb begins from the José Rivas Refuge at 4,864 meters—the main high-mountain hut on Cotopaxi. After an early dinner, climbers rest until midnight when the ascent begins. The route starts on volcanic sand before transitioning onto the glacier, illuminated only by headlamps and a sky full of stars.
Guides set a steady pace, navigating safely across the glacier to reach the summit between 6:00 and 7:30 AM, just as sunrise breaks over the Andes. Reaching Cotopaxi’s summit offers a panoramic view of Antisana, Cayambe, Ilinizas, Chimborazo, and the entire Avenue of the Volcanoes.

Daily Departures & Professional Mountain Guides

Ecuador Eco Adventure operates Cotopaxi climbs almost every day during the main season (October–February and June–August).
Our team of ASEGUIM-certified mountain guides provides technical expertise, emergency readiness, and years of experience on Cotopaxi’s glacier. We strictly follow safety protocols and make summit decisions based on real-time snow and weather conditions.
Technical gear—including crampons, ice axe, helmet, harness, and mountaineering boots—is always included.
