Trekking El Altar

Trekking El Altar Volcano: Exploring Ecuador’s Forgotten Giant:
Hidden deep inside Sangay National Park, the Altar Trek Ecuador is one of the country’s most breathtaking and least-traveled adventures. El Altar, also known as Kapak Urku in Kichwa, was once a towering stratovolcano rivaling Chimborazo in height. After a massive eruption thousands of years ago, its summit collapsed, leaving behind jagged peaks, a horseshoe-shaped crater, and a collection of stunning glacial lakes. Today, the El Altar hike is considered one of the most rewarding treks in the Andes, offering dramatic scenery and unforgettable landscapes. There are two main routes: the classic trek to the Yellow Lagoon via Hacienda Releche, and the multi-day adventure to the western El Altar lagoons through the Bocátoma access.

The Yellow Lagoon Route via Hacienda Releche

The most popular El Altar hike leads to Laguna Amarilla (Yellow Lagoon Ecuador), a glacial lake located inside the crater at 4,300 meters. Starting at Hacienda Releche, the trail winds through páramo grasslands, marshes, and rolling hills before reaching the ridge overlooking the lagoon. The sight of its golden-green waters reflecting the snowcapped peaks of El Altar is unforgettable and has made this trek famous worldwide.

This route can be completed as a long one-day hike or as an overnight camping trip. However, since September 1, access through Hacienda Releche is prohibited on Sundays and Mondays, even with permits. Visitors must carefully plan their itineraries and secure authorization from the park administration.

The Western Lagoons via Bocátoma

For a more challenging expedition, trekkers can choose the 3-day El Altar lagoons trek via the Bocátoma access point. This adventure reveals the volcano’s western face and a chain of turquoise glacial lakes. Along the way, you’ll see the iconic horseshoe crater walls and visit five spectacular lagoons:

  • Laguna Azul (Blue Lagoon): Famous for its deep cobalt color.
  • Laguna Verde (Green Lagoon): An emerald lake fed by glacial meltwater.
  • Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon): Mysterious and striking beneath towering cliffs.
  • Laguna Estrellada (Star Lagoon): Shimmering with reflections under clear skies.
  • Laguna Mandur: A serene lagoon hidden in the páramo.

Camping is required on this trek, and conditions can be tough, with freezing nights and misty mornings. Still, this route is a favorite among serious trekkers looking for trekking in Ecuador that combines untouched wilderness with cultural richness.

Permits and Access Requirements

It is compulsory to obtain permits and register with Sangay National Park before attempting either route. The park enforces strict regulations to protect the fragile ecosystem. For visitors, working with a licensed operator ensures smoother access and less risk of last-minute restrictions.
