Climb Cotopaxi & Chimborazo on a Budget: The Ultimate 5-Day Expedition
Looking for the most affordable way to climb Ecuador’s two highest and most famous volcanoes?

If reaching the summits of Cotopaxi (5,897 m / 19,347 ft) and Chimborazo (6,263 m / 20,548 ft) is on your bucket list, you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars or dedicate two weeks to the expedition.
With the right approach, professional local guides, and proper acclimatization, you can safely climb both mountains in just five days.
At Ecuador Eco Adventure, we’ve developed a budget-friendly program that combines Ecuador’s two iconic volcanoes while giving your body the recovery time needed to maximize your chances of standing on both summits.
Why Cotopaxi First Makes All the Difference
One of the biggest mistakes independent climbers make is attempting Chimborazo first.
Although Chimborazo is only a few hundred meters higher than Cotopaxi, the climb is considerably more demanding. The altitude, longer summit day, and increased physical effort make it a much tougher objective.
Starting with Cotopaxi allows your body to adapt naturally to sleeping and climbing above 5,000 meters, making the transition to Chimborazo significantly more manageable.
This progression is widely used by experienced mountain guides throughout Ecuador.

The Secret to Success: Recovery at Altitude
Many budget programs advertise climbing both volcanoes in four days.
While this may sound attractive, most of these approaches move directly from Cotopaxi to Chimborazo without proper rest.
In reality, fatigue—not altitude—is often the main reason climbers fail on Chimborazo.
After spending 10 to 12 hours on Cotopaxi, your body needs time to recover.
That is why we include a dedicated recovery night at Chimborazo Basecamp Lodge, located at approximately 3,900 meters (12,795 ft).
Instead of rushing between destinations, you remain at altitude where you can:
- Recover physically
- Continue acclimatizing naturally
- Rehydrate properly
- Organize your climbing equipment
- Enjoy nutritious meals
- Sleep comfortably before the Chimborazo ascent
This simple but crucial pause dramatically improves summit success rates.
A Smarter Way to Combine Cotopaxi & Chimborazo
Day 1 – Approach to Cotopaxi
The journey begins in Quito and follows the Avenue of the Volcanoes into Cotopaxi National Park.
After reaching high altitude and completing equipment checks, the team continues toward the José Rivas Refuge at 4,864 meters (15,958 ft).
An early dinner is followed by rest before the midnight ascent.
Day 2 – Cotopaxi Summit (5,897 m)
Shortly after midnight, the climb begins on the glacier.
The route crosses snowfields and volcanic terrain before reaching one of South America’s most iconic summits.
After sunrise on Cotopaxi, the descent returns to the refuge for breakfast.
From there, private transport continues south to Riobamba, where a hot shower and proper rest await.
Day 3 – Recovery at Chimborazo Basecamp
This day is intentionally slow and restorative, we depart at 11 am after a good night rest and a hearty breakfast.
At nearly 4,000 meters, your body continues acclimatizing while recovering from Cotopaxi.
Time is spent resting, exploring the reserve, observing wild vicuñas, and preparing equipment for the next objective.
This recovery period is one of the most important factors in Chimborazo success.
Day 4 – High Camp Preparation
After lunch, the team enters Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve.
A short ascent leads from the Carrel Refuge to High Camp, where the final preparations for summit night take place.
An early dinner is followed by rest before the midnight start.
Day 5 – Chimborazo Summit (6,263 m)
The climb begins under a clear Andean sky.
The route ascends glaciers and ridges toward Ecuador’s highest point.
Reaching Chimborazo is a rare achievement—its summit is the closest point on Earth to outer space due to the planet’s equatorial bulge.
After the summit, the descent returns to Carrell Refuge for breakfast, then we drive back to Riobamba where expedition ends.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can beginners attempt Cotopaxi and Chimborazo?
Yes. Many participants are first-time mountaineers. Guides provide full instruction on crampons, ice axes, and glacier travel before each ascent.
Is five days enough?
Yes. This structure includes proper acclimatization and a critical recovery day, making it one of the most efficient and successful ways to combine both climbs.
Why is recovery so important?
Even with good acclimatization, fatigue significantly affects performance. A rest night at altitude greatly improves comfort, safety, and summit success on Chimborazo.
What about weather conditions?
Weather in the Andes is always unpredictable. Conditions can change rapidly, and summit attempts depend on real-time decisions made by certified guides.
