Is Cotopaxi Open for Climbing?

climb cotopaxi and chimborazo with the bestAfter the volcanic activity in August 2015, the government closed Cotopaxi National Park to the public for 2 years due to safety concerns. The Cotopaxi mountain is now open again for climbing as of October 2017 now that the volcano has settled.

For safety reasons, there is a maximum of two people per mountain guide by law. If you are climbing solo it will be only yourself and the ASEGUIM certified mountain guide.

In November 2022, Cotopaxi National Park faced closure following a mild eruption. But as of February 2024, the park has reopened its doors, welcoming climbers once more to explore its stunning landscapes.

How long does it take to climb Cotopaxi? The climb starts from the Jose Rivas mountain refuge, at midnight, we need at least 4 days in order to make all the paperwork and reservations effective in order to book, the actual climb takes 2 days, and the attack to the summit 7 hours. The summit window is typically between 6:00–8:00 AM depending on conditions.

 

Routes to the summit of Cotopaxi:

Cotopaxi presents a non-technical ascent, yet according to regulations, summiting requires the assistance of a certified Mountain Guide.

From the Jose Rivas refuge, climbers encounter two primary routes: the Yanasacha and the Heartbreaker. Guides make the crucial decision on the day of the climb, selecting the route that promises the optimal combination of safety and success for reaching the summit.

  • Endurance:

Cotopaxi; standing at 5897 m above sea level, is quite the challenge, most people with good physical shape can do it, however, it is a 6-hour climb, on a semi-vertical glacier, and special alpine gear is needed to accomplish it.

If you are at sea level training on long runs or walks will give you the endurance you need to reach the summit to the crater successfully.

While the climb itself doesn’t demand extensive technical skills, navigating the altitude can pose a challenge. This ensures you’re in optimal condition for the ascent.

Please note that the $180 deal mentioned in the “Lonely Planet” guidebook is outdated by 15 years. Due to stringent regulations imposed on tour operators and mountain guides, as well as changes in the country’s economy, costs have significantly increased.

    1. Day1 Cotopaxi

      P

      Departure from Quito in the morning with a scenic drive into Cotopaxi National Park. Upon arrival, we continue to the Cotopaxi parking area at approximately 4,600–4,800 m, followed by a short acclimatization hike to the José Rivas Refuge (4,864 m).

      After time to rest and adapt to the altitude, we descend and transfer to our lodge or refuge for final preparation. In the afternoon, we review equipment and receive a detailed briefing from the guide. Dinner is served early (around 17:00), followed by rest before the summit attempt.

    2. Day2 Summit Cotopaxi

      The climb begins around midnight with a gradual ascent across the glacier under headlamp light. The route involves steady slopes on snow and ice, requiring crampons and basic glacier travel techniques.

      The summit attempt aims for an early morning window, typically between 06:00–08:00, depending on weather and mountain conditions. From the summit of Cotopaxi (5,897 m), climbers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Andes.

      After reaching the highest point—or the safe turnaround point if conditions require—we descend back to the refuge for breakfast. Following a short rest, we continue down to the parking area and return to Quito, arriving in the early afternoon.
