Mindo Birdwatching
Mindo Birdwatching – Ecuador Eco Adventure
Mindo is one of the most important birdwatching destinations in South America, located in the Chocó Andino Biosphere Reserve and home to a staggering concentration of endemic and migratory species. The lush cloud forest, which lies only two and a half hours from Quito, provides excellent access to hummingbirds, toucans, barbets, trogons, motmots, manakins, antpittas and over 550 other recorded species. Ecuador Eco Adventure offers two ready-made birdwatching programs for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts of all levels.
Option 1 – 3-Day Mindo Birdwatching (Basic Trip)
This option is ideal for travelers with limited time who still want to experience the magic of the cloud forest and observe its extraordinary birdlife. The program focuses on the Mindo Valley and nearby private reserves known for reliable sightings of hummingbirds, tanagers and Chocó endemics. Guests will spend their time walking forest trails, observing mixed feeding flocks, and visiting specially designed feeding stations that attract hummingbirds and toucans. It also includes the possibility to observe the spectacular Cock-of-the-Rock lek (seasonal). Accommodation is in a comfortable birding lodge and guided by a professional English-speaking naturalist guide.
Highlights:
• Over 200 possible species in a single trip
• Hummingbird gardens with up-close observation
• Native cloud forest trails and endemic Chocó species
• Optional nocturnal birding session
Best suited for: Beginner / intermediate birdwatchers, Quito-based travelers, short wildlife escapes
Option 2 – 4-Day Mindo & Bellavista Birdwatching (Andean Toucan Tracking)
This extended version includes the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, located in the Tandayapa Valley, which is an internationally acclaimed research site and one of the most reliable places to see the Plate-billed Mountain Toucan and other cloud forest specialists. The trip combines two different habitats – the upper montane forest of Bellavista and the lower humid forest of Mindo – resulting in a remarkably high species count and excellent photographic opportunities. Visitors will explore a network of well-maintained trails, visit active hummingbird stations, and observe endemic species such as the Chocó Warbler, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker and Toucan Barbet. A local ornithology guide accompanies the entire trip.
Highlights:
• Andean Toucan tracking in Bellavista Reserve
• More than 300 species possible across two ecosystems
• Bird feeding stations and observation decks for photography
• Combination of high and low elevation cloud forest
• Opportunity to observe Cock-of-the-Rock display (depending on season)
Best suited for: Intermediate / advanced birders, ornithology enthusiasts, wildlife photographers and travelers seeking a more in-depth birding experience
